How to increase traffic to get to the top of search results

Get to the top of Google

Increasing traffic and getting to the top of search results is something every website aims for, but if you’re new to this you’ll most likely be concentrating on the wrong things. If you’re an established website owner you’ll most likely still be searching for the answer. We look at how to get to the top of search engine results and increase your traffic.

Why do you want to get more traffic by reaching the top of Google search results?

This may sound like a bizarre question, but this is actually a really important thing to understand. There must be reason why you want to get to the top of search results, and understanding the real reason for this is important.

If you’re looking to increase traffic and get to the top of search results just to make money then you need to stop right now. There are many different websites out there such as E-commerce websites where you sell products to visitors, or you may have an information site providing your visitors with valuable information. Or perhaps you have an affiliate marketing website, which recommends products and services to your visitors.

Two of these types of websites are obviously aimed at making money, and that is the E-commerce website and the affiliate marketing website. The information website might be looking to may a passive income by selling advertising space on their website, so when you have traffic visit your site you get a passive income from the adverts people may click on.

So it’s obvious that all these three websites are essentially looking to make money, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that, but you need to ensure you’re going about things in the right way. Would you be happy if you received lots of traffic to your site, but was completely aware that the content on your website was not very good, and completely unoriginal. If the answer is yes as long as you were making money, then this is the problem you have, and is the problem you must face.

You must be offering your visitors something they want

This is absolute key to being successful online, and it sounds obvious but there are too many websites out there that put money first. These websites to the trained eye can be seen almost immediately after visiting the website, and more importantly, Google can see these websites as well.

It sort of stands to reason why Google would be so against websites that offer viewers no value, as any search result somebody clicks on from a Google search result has the risk of reputational damage to Google. Google is by far the largest and most used search engine in the world, and Google wants it to stay this way. They do this by ensuring their web bots that crawl the internet look out for original content, and they also look out for websites offering virtually no original content.

This is the right thing to do as Google is putting their visitors first, and this is something every webmaster should be doing as well. So if you’ve been looking at making money first before putting the visitor first, this will explain why you’ve not been successful at getting lots of traffic, and why you’re not getting to the top of Google search results.

The reason why so many websites concentrate on traffic before quality content

This goes back a long way and it was when the internet was relatively a new technology, and back then the Google bots were not coded to look for original content, and they were not coded to look for unoriginal content. There main reason for existence was to the crawl the internet and index pages. So they could understand what the page was about the web bots checked which words kept on appearing throughout the article. This then allowed the bots to correctly index articles, so they would appear when somebody searched using a keyword mentioned in the article on numerous occasions.

At first this was great because the internet and search engines were completely new to everyone who used them, and people were amazed they had this new tool that allowed them to search for a particular subject and get instant information, all at the touch of a few buttons.

As with everything in this world people working in the technology industry started to see the loopholes that the bots had, and they realised over time that they could exploit the Google Bots and get their websites at the top of the search results, which means they got huge amounts of traffic.

This was the moment people started to concentrate on exploiting search results rather than doing the right thing, which was working hard to provide the visitor with what they wanted. Individual webmasters were making a fortune, and they knew they could do this without really offering the visitor much in return.

It also meant these tech-savvy individuals could now sell their services to companies around the world, as they knew every company would want to get to the top of search results so they could receive more traffic. This still goes on today, there are thousands of marketing companies who state they can help you get to the top of search results, but they’ll want money in return for this service.

However, Google bots have grown up dramatically since the early days, so these marketing agencies cannot really offer you much, as Google bots now know all the tricks. This suggests the marketing agencies are still clinging onto something that was successful a few years ago, and they are doing this so they can exploit all the companies out there willing to pay for such a service.

So what changed? – Google launched their Penguin update

Google knew what was happening for some years, but they needed to ensure any change in how search results appear; did not have an impact on the websites out there that do provide great valuable content for their visitors.

In April 2012 Google did the now infamous Penguin update on their search site and overnight websites that was getting to the top of the search results, and receiving huge amounts of traffic, found themselves no longer receiving such great benefits.

This caused an uproar in the technology world, and webmasters were furious with the update. However, should they really be furious with such an update, after all, the update was done for the interest of the visitors, not to ensure webmasters were cashing in on poor websites offering little value that was stuffed with keywords. Keywords are still used today, and they still have some importance, but not as much as they once did.

I remember a news headline about how a small business in England that made cakes had lost over 80% of their revenue due to the Penguin update. They were so concerned about no longer being at the top of search results that they thought they would go out of business.

There were millions of websites from around the world that was impacted by the update, and many of these websites provided valuable content. The mistake they made was to try and manipulate how much traffic they were getting by using external marketing agencies. It is fair to say that many of the companies were unaware of what was happening, and they were blinded by the promise from these marketing agencies. The agencies asked for cash in return for getting the website more traffic, they most likely didn’t realise the agencies were doing this by stuffing their articles with keywords. However, I am sure there were many companies and websites who were aware and simply didn’t care as long as they go the extra traffic. This is a common thing in the human world, and it’s called greed.

So how do you get traffic to your website?

At the start of this article we explained to get to the top of search results, and receive lots of traffic to your website you must offer valuable content. That hasn’t changed, and it was always the intention of Google to offer visitors who search on their site a great experience.

You must be offering the visitors to your site something they want to read, and you should try and avoid keyword stuffing your articles to try and get to the top of the search results. Keywords are still important because web bots do still need to know how to index your page, and to index your pages correctly they need to understand the subject. This doesn’t mean that you need to add keywords so many times that the article becomes unreadable to your visitor.

So when you’re writing articles you should use your keywords when it feels natural to do so. If you keep on using the same words over and over again, and you read it back and realise this, then you’ll know you have been using keywords too much within your article.

The simple way to get more traffic to your site is to stop trying to manipulate the search engine bots, and write quality content that visitors will want to read. It is as simple as that, this takes hard work and determination, but that hard work will pay off providing you always put your visitors before making a profit.
